Traditional souvenirs from Belarus?

updated on 18/10/2016

While most tourists agree that Belarus is not the country for grand shopping and international brands, there are still some things that can be brought back as souvenirs. Before we get into detail, note, that babushka means grandmother, though is generally applied to an old lady, not a headscarf, and Matryoshka, a colorful wooden doll accommodating a dozen others is from Russia though they produce and sell it locally.

Foods. Red caviar (though Belarus is not a marine state) is one of the things that your friends back home might appreciate. If bought from a recommended vendor (who cares about what he sells) at a nice price it will make a highlight of your candlelight dinner. Belarus is also famous for its chocolate sweets produced by Kommunarka Factory. Some people like it and some don’t – just try some before buying. Vodka can make a souvenir, too - take a look at the brand store by Kristall of Minsk in the Stolitsa shopping center. This mass-produced beverage in Belarus is normally of high quality that is monitored by the state – the monopoly producer.

Goods. Linen cloth and things made of it - suits, frocks, table cloths and napkins, bedsheets – are available at reasonable prices.

Souvenirs. Various hand-made tools, e.g. pottery, wooden spoons, dolls, carved boxes and even woven baskets can make an original present or a good memento. Standard things like badges, magnets, postcards are also widely available, especially in souvenir shops in Minsk Trinity Suburb.
