Belarus National Library tour

updated on 19/01/2017

It took four years to construct the most expensive building in the Republic of Belarus. The Belarus National Library, the destination of one of my Minsk tours, is an object of cultural heritage of Belarus of the highest value, its mission being storage and preservation of the knowledge for the community. The building itself features a lot of top-end equipment including a high-speed trolley system that delivers the items to readers.

In the course of the tour you will hear about the process and problems of construction. The tour will take you along the galleries on the second and third floor with a local guide explaining the way things work in the new Minsk library. On the upper floors there is a Museum of Rare Books, where the oldest exhibits of the Minsk Library are available on display – the nail-size printed book and a huge medieval Bible edition. The Minsk library tour is concluded with an ascent to the observation pad on top of the library.

Did you know that... The National Library in Minsk weighs about 270 000 tons which is about 4 times as much as Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow and can accommodate twenty 9-floor dwelling houses. Each of the several ground floors is six times as large as a standard football pitch. The Minsk library storage capacity is 14 million items. It will take a keen reader 12 centuries of non-stop reading to read all the books in the library… It is not surprising then, that the National Library of Belarus is number 24 in the chart of 50 strangest buildings of the world compiled by villageofjoy.com.
